‘Watts for Dinner’: Red Rooster is something to crow about

I love breakfast! In a world with so much confusion and uncertainty, it makes so much sense that so many folks start out their day by eating it. Short of someone showing up at your front door with a giant check (I’m talking to you Publisher’s Clearing House), there’s not many better ways to start your day. If you must get out of bed; breakfast is your reward.

On this late Sunday morning, there was a wait to get a seat at Red Rooster. That’s usually a good sign. It was less 10 minutes as we opted for the bar. It was a great vantage point to see all the scrumptious-looking dishes coming from the kitchen.

I ordered the Greek omelet ($8.95), featuring fresh baby spinach, tomatoes, caramelized onions, olives and feta cheese. You get your choice of potatoes – home fries, hash browns, casserole (think cheesy potato goodness) or potato salad and toast. I picked the casserole and the wheat toast.

Two things struck me as the plate was placed before me. First, the omelet was beautiful; not broken or burned. Second, the items were inside the fold, like a taco; not mixed into the egg. Yes! The omelet was a fluffy delight with generous amounts of fresh feta. The ingredients were blended to perfection.

The casserole had to be nixed (because they ran out; another issue when the restaurant is popular, and you are less than two hours away from closing time). So, I opted for the potato salad. What?! You say. Yes. Perhaps not the best companion side; but I have had the casserole before; and the only thing that could curb by disappointment was Red Rooster’s legendary potato salad. And it did not disappoint.

My partner in dine picked the ‘Huevos Santa Fe’ ($8.95), a flour tortilla layered with chorizo (spicy sausage), black beans, green chilies, cheddar jack cheese, two fried eggs, with fresh salsa and sour cream on the side. Of note, he opted for scrambled eggs instead.

This dish was an artistic beauty. I was so jealous. The chorizo was authentic, yet not as spicy or greasy as you sometimes encounter. It was expertly crafted to meet the tastes of Islanders without losing its lovely composition.

My only regret? Just as we were finishing up, someone sat next to us and ordered a mimosa. What the heck?! I didn’t see that on the menu. Double checked. Yup, there it is. Maybe next time Red Rooster. So, we headed out on our next adventure without a morning buzz.

Looking for a quality breakfast at a reasonable price. Red Rooster is something to crow about.
