Our next stop is one of my favorite breakfast spots on Marco Island, Doreen's Cup of Joe.

For my morning meal, I picked the create your own omelet. You can choose up to five items (I assume before incurring additional charges).

My first ingredient was chorizo. Now, let me be clear, chorizo is a type of pork sausage; and for this dish you can pick chorizo, Italian sausage or traditional breakfast sausage. I love chorizo tacos, nachos and … heck! Who am I kidding? I love chorizo everything. For my remaining ingredients, I picked bacon, mushrooms, avocado and mozzarella cheese. A work of art, I know. Trademark pending.

I added a side of hash browns and wheat toast.

The omelet was amazing. The chorizo was not as spicy as I had hoped or expected and tasted more like traditional breakfast sausage; the avocado was fresh, and the other ingredients were as you’d expect. The hash browns were nice and crisp. Not too oily. A big thumbs up there. And the wheat toast was simply amazing. Thick and delicious.

My partner in dine picked two new items: the avocado toast: two slices of wheat toast topped with avocado and tomatoes on top and eggs any style – he went with scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and a side of bacon. He also ordered the acai bowl, with your choice of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberry, banana, coconut, walnuts, pecans, almonds, granola, honey or Nutella.

He picked granola, coconut, strawberries and honey. It was another work of art.

While the avocado plate was great, he pointed out that the eggs were served on top of the toast, thereby heating the avocado and changing the experience, and not in a good way. He also felt the dish could have done without the tomato or perhaps make that a side item.

The bacon was amazing and the eggs fluffy and delicious.

As for the acai bowl, it was top notch with high quality ingredients. He compared it to the very popular vendor at the Marco Island Farmer’s Market; who generally has a line clear across the aisle.

Whether you’re looking for healthy, hearty or both, Doreen’s has the perfect breakfast for you.
