‘Watts for Dinner’: A better Whopper? That’s ‘Impossible’

The Impossible Whopper from Burger King, South Naples.

By now you’ve most likely heard that Burger King is selling the Impossible Whopper, featuring a hamburger patty made entirely of plants that supposedly tastes exactly like a regular Whopper.

The Impossible Whopper was developed by Silicon Valley-based Impossible Foods, hence the name. According to the company’s website, the patty is made with a soy protein concentrate, several oils (including coconut and sunflower oil), and additives.

So, what’s the point? It’s the same bun, made of bleached flour; same cheese (optional). Ok, it might not he the healthiest thing you can eat; but if you’re going to eat a Whopper anyway, better to eat this one.

At 240 calories, and 8 grams of saturated fat, the Impossible Whopper comes in far under a regular Whopper (600-plus calories and 30-plus grams of fat).

You can believe the hype. The Impossible Whopper tastes very similar to the real deal. The only difference my party noticed was that the patty was a little cooler than usual, temperature wise. But that likely has little to do with it being plant based.

If you’re wanting to cut a few calories or just cut down on the amount of meat you consume, I highly recommend this burger.

While we were there, we also sampled the chicken nuggets, which were on sale, 10 pieces for $1. Not sure how they can sell them for that cheap. While they’re far from being the best chicken nuggets I ever ate, they were well worth the price.

We also sampled the Twix milkshake, and it’s a hard pass. The cookie bits were stale, and the soft serve was just too creamy for my tastes. There are much better milkshakes out there.

With meat consumption on the rise, it’s nice to know that if shortages ever happen, we have a viable alternative. Also, shifting to a more plant-based meals and curbing meat consumption not only helps the planet, it can also improve your health by lowering intake of saturated fat, lowering the risk of developing heart disease and cancer, leading causes of death.

This Whopper is Impossible in name only.
