'I had no idea who I was': Jeff Probst of 'Survivor' recalls temporary amnesia scare

Jeff Probst is opening up about a recent health scare.

During his appearance on "Live With Kelly and Ryan," the "Survivor" host revealed he experienced a temporary condition a few months ago that made him worried for his mental well-being.

In a clip from the show published Wednesday, Probst explained that he realized something was amiss with his memory while booking a trip to Las Vegas for his wife and himself. He had to provide his wife's birthdate, and couldn't remember it.

He panicked and called her.

He said, "I don't really know what's happening. I don't know anything. Where are the kids?' "

His wife told him that they were at school and she was at work. Everything seemed normal on her end, but something was wrong with Probst.

Host Kelly Ripa joked that the fact Probst forgot his wife's birthday may not be indicative of a larger problem.

"That sounds like you're just a man," she said. "So far this sounds normal. And then what happened?"

Probst explained that for the two hours after that call, he "had zero recollection of anything that was happening" and "had no idea who I was, where I was."

He even wrote a note to himself on his laptop that read: "I have no idea why I'm wearing these clothes. I have no idea where our kids are. I have no idea what day it is. I have no idea why I'm writing this."

After writing the note, he had no recollection of typing it.

'Survivor' castaway ejected for the first time in show history for inappropriate behavior

Probst told Seacrest and Ripa that the next morning he saw a neurosurgeon, who told him that he had experienced transient global amnesia, a condition that, according to Mayo Clinic, involves sudden, temporary memory loss. Its causes are unknown.

Before Probst felt like himself again, he worried he was suffering from early dementia. But his memory did return after a few hours, and "it was like, that quickly," Probst said, snapping his fingers. "I went, 'Oh wow. I'm back.' "

Ripa put a positive spin on Probst's experience, saying that it gives him empathy "for groups of people that you never even considered before."

Probst agreed and added that the experience has made him appreciate weekends more, too.

"Now, more than ever, I live for Fridays," he said. "I think of the week, and I go, 'OK, I got one more weekend. Let's go.' "
