Selena Gomez opens up about mental health with Miley Cyrus, talks having bipolar disorder

Selena Gomez is opening up about her mental health.

The "Lose You to Love Me" songstress appeared on Friday's episode of "Bright Minded," an Instagram Live talk show hosted by Miley Cyrus, where she spoke about having bipolar disorder and the importance of mental health.

According to E! and Billboard, this is the first time Gomez has spoken publicly about having bipolar disorder.

"Recently, I went to one of the best mental hospitals in the world... (McLean Hospital), and I discussed that, after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar," Gomez said. "When I go to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn't scare me once I know it. And I think people get scared of that, right?"

Gomez also spoke about the resistance many have to addressing their mental health.

"I've seen some of it even in my own family, where I'm like, 'What's going on?'" she continued. "I'm from Texas. It's not known to talk about your mental health. You've gotta seem cool, and then I see anger built up in teenagers or... young adults because they are wanting that so badly... I wanted to know everything about it, and it took the fear away."

USA TODAY has reached out to Gomez's rep for further comment.

This is not the first time Gomez has gotten candid about her mental health.

Nearly a year after stepping away from social media and the spotlight, Gomez opened up about her battle with depression and anxiety while accepting the McLean Award for Mental Health Advocacy at the Massachusetts hospital's annual dinner in September.

Selena Gomez says she's 'healthier' after battling 'scariest moments of my life'

"Last year, I was suffering mentally and emotionally and I wasn't able to stay all kept up and together," she said during her speech, shared on Instagram. "I wasn't able to keep a smile or to keep things looking normal. It felt like all of my pain and my anxiety washed over me all at once and it was one of the scariest moments of my life."

Gomez revealed that receiving a diagnosis left her "equal parts of terrified and relieved."

"Terrified, obviously, because that veil was lifted," she said. "But relieved that I had the knowledge of why I had suffered for so many years with depression and anxiety."

Gomez, 27, said she faced her diagnosis head-on, "as my mother taught me to face my fears and challenges when I was younger," which led her to a much better place.

"Although this does not mean that it has all gone away, I can say that after a year of a lot of intense work … I am happier, I am healthier, and I'm in control of my emotions and thoughts more than I've ever been," she shared. "So I'm very happy about that."
