'It's just like a dream': Paris Hilton and Carter Reum detail engagement, plans for the future

Days after announcing her engagement to boyfriend Carter Reum, Paris Hilton is detailing her relationship with her husband-to-be.

The couple appeared in their first joint interview since the engagement to reflect on the memorable moment, with Hilton admitting she was "very surprised," during Sunday's episode of her podcast, "This is Paris."

Although Reum popped the question on Hilton's 40th birthday Wednesday, Hilton recalled her initial disappointment when she assumed he would propose on their one-year anniversary.

"We had done a trip to Bora Bora a few months ago for one of our anniversaries and it was just so romantic," Hilton said. "He had this boat take us to this private island and there was this gorgeous dinner set up. It looked like something out of a wedding."

Despite feeling a "little bummed," she shared her boyfriend's comforting reassurance.

"When I do ask you, it's going to be something even more amazing than this, so you'll see soon," he told her.

Reum also detailed his engagement speech, which Hilton called "very sweet."

"As I'm reminded every day I'm the luckiest guy in the world. From the first day to New York eating Chinese take out food, I knew I wanted to know the real Paris, not Paris Hilton," he said.

When discussing their 15-month relationship, Hilton applauded Reum for making her "feel so safe" — something she said she had never felt before.

"I've had a lot of bad relationships before and with him it's just like a dream," Hilton said. "I feel like everything I went through in life was worth it because now i have the perfect man."

And how might their future look? Hilton said she and her husband-to-be are hoping to start a family together.

"It’s something that I’ve really been looking forward to and we’ve talked about a lot ever since we've been together, just having a family is going to be so exciting and how cute they're going to be, and how fun it's going to be," Hilton said. "First the wedding, then the babies."

She also added that she plans to take Reum's last name.

"I'm going to take it, but I feel like a hyphenated thing like Paris Hilton-Reum, because my name is just my name. I like it."

The two began dating in December 2019, and Hilton gushed on their one-year anniversary about having found her "partner for life." She was previously engaged to Chris Zylka in 2018. 

Speaking to USA TODAY in December, Hilton said she was "so incredibly happy and in the best relationship of my life."

"I feel like a grownup finally, and I'm so excited for the next phase of my life: to have a family and just grow up," she added.
