Taylor Swift gets intimate in 'City of Lover Concert,' reveals writing 'Cornelia Street' in bathtub

In ABC's "Taylor Swift City of Lover Concert" Sunday night, the pop star showed her full skill set in just eight songs and 42 minutes, powering through a stripped-down, mostly acoustic set.

Swift, 30, sang, danced, played piano and guitar solo, and even worked in some dance footwork during the concert filmed at L’Olympia Theater in Paris last September, featuring songs from her (then) new album, "Lover."

"I was thinking about how I'd really like to play some of these songs for the very first time," said Swift, after dancing in opening number "Me!" "I was thinking the best way to do it would be playing the songs acoustic, the way I wrote them."

She then went into a stripped-down version of the pop number "Death By a Thousand Cuts."

September seems like a lifetime ago, with the small French venue clearly not social distancing as the packed fans screamed in delight along with every Swift utterance. This was long before there were universal concerns about the coronavirus, which canceled Swift's Lover Fest world tour – making the concert a one-night-only event.

Swift highlighted her songwriting throughout "City of Lover," talking about her inspirations during an acoustic guitar portion that featured the singer alone in the stage spotlight. For the song "Cornelia Street," Swift revealed almost offhandedly an unusual song origin.

"I think I wrote this song, actually like, when I was in the bathtub," she said. "Anyways, just for context."

The song-autobiographic star kept the music and the patter happy, not delving into the heartbreak in many songs. Swift admitted she loved writing about the complexity of love. Introducing "The Archer," Swift told the audience, "If any of us have ever been let down before, or we’ve felt like we cannot trust a good feeling. That’s what I wrote this next song about."

For her fifth number, Swift stepped up to the piano to play in "Daylight" before rocking again in "You Need to Calm Down."

She ended the concert with her admitted favorite of the new bunch, leading on the acoustic guitar with the album title track, "Lover." She talked about the "magic" of creating the song that came during the night.

"I just went to the piano, stumbled over to the piano, sat down and this song happened so quick," she said. "I just love those moments."
