‘Watts for Dinner’: Sunset Grille — Gorgeous Gulf views, hearty food

Our next doing destination is Sunset Grille on Marco Island. There’s something for everyone on the menu, but perhaps the restaurants’ best feature is the view. Whether you eat inside or out, Marco’s beautiful beach and waterfront is just a glance away.

On this weekend afternoon, temps were hovering just below 70 and a nice breeze was coming off the water, so we decided to dine outside on the patio.

Things got off to an appetizing start with the “Grilled Avocado” ($14). The avocado is stuffed with black bean and corn salsa and topped with goat cheese and a siracha aioli.

The presentation was amazing. And the flavors made for a varied and delicious blend. Perhaps my favorite thing was the flatbread triangles that accompanied the dish. I’m a sucker for carbs!

I also got a cup of chili ($8, add cheese or onion for $1). I have a weakness for chili and Sunset Grille’s is thick and meaty! Amazing!

For my main dish, I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich ($17). You can get it blackened or jerked. The bun is thick and golden and the filet was so big it hung off the large bun. I got mine blackened which added a spicy kick. It comes with lettuce, tomato and onion (?). Yup, onion! I don’t know about you, but I don’t eat onion with chicken sandwiches.

My dining companion also had a hankering for a chicken sandwich, but he got the “Teriyaki Fried Chicken Sandwich” ($19). It’s a chicken breast lightly breaded and fried golden, dipped in “our signature teriyaki garlic sauce.”

He had the same large bun and also had a filet that was bigger than said bun. This golden-brown breast looked amazing. And I sampled a bit of the overhang — and yes, I used a fork and knife; I’m not a monster. It was sweet and delicious.

This was our first official visit since November 2021, just over two years. During that visit we started with the fried cheese curds and the boneless buffalo wings. I love these cheesy little nuggets. Especially dipped in the marinara sauce. I also dipped them in the wing’s blue cheese. Double-cheese amazement!

We got the boneless wings mild. And Sunset Grille did something amazing. Not only did they serve mild wings, but they were still full of flavor. In addition to the aforementioned blue cheese, the wings are also served with celery sticks – if that’s your thing.

For my main entrée, I selected the grilled cheese. Why, you ask? Just like the menu said: “for the kid in all of us.” And I also timed it out to arrive with the chili. Pure heaven!

You can get the grilled cheese with white or wheat. And the bread/sandwich is huge. And the amount of cheese was generous, to say the least.

My partner in dine selected the fish and chips. You can have grouper or tilapia lightly battered and deep fried. It’s served with fries and a honey mustard sauce.

In this case, the grouper was cooked to perfection. It was perfectly paired with cole slaw and a heaping helping of crispy-battered fries. I highly recommend this dish.

Service was prompt and attentive. The atmosphere is causal and as I said, the view is amazing. Escape to Sunset Grille today. Happy eating!
