Man dies after being struck by lightning while working on Deltona roof, officials say

A man working on a roof in Deltona died after being struck by lightning Monday, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

Edvin J. Velasquez Cinto, 24, was on the roof of a home on Sterling Pointe Drive when lightning struck him, causing him to fall off the house and onto the concrete, a news release from the sheriff's office states. Deputies responded to the house, northwest of the intersection of Fort Smith and Providence boulevards, about 2 p.m. Monday.

Cinto, of Apopka, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2:40 p.m., according to the sheriff's office. The cause of death ultimately will be determined by the medical examiner, but information so far points to the lightning bolt.
