One dead in Pensacola officer-involved shooting: The latest on what we know now

From staff reports

A man who was shot by a Pensacola police officer late Friday afternoon has died due to his injuries, authorities have confirmed.

Pensacola Police Department spokesman Mike Wood said the man disarmed an officer during a struggle with police and then another officer shot the man. The man, whose name has not been released, was transported to Baptist Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The incident started when a Pensacola police officer smelled the odor of marijuana from a vehicle in front of him and tried to initiate a traffic stop, according to Wood.

Pensacola police respond to an officer-involved shooting Friday at the intersection of C and Brainerd streets.

The driver reportedly continued driving at a low speed while throwing narcotics out of the window. He continued to a residence near the intersection of C and Brainerd streets.

Officers attempted to take the driver into custody once he stopped, Wood said. The man resisted arrest, a struggle ensued and the man then tried to disarm an officer and eventually disarmed the officer, Wood said.

The driver was then shot by a second officer.

As is standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.

West Brainerd between C and F streets was closed as law enforcement officers worked the scene into the evening.

Family members and friends quickly converged at the scene trying to determine what happened, then eventually moved on to the hospital. Several individuals said the driver had just come from attending a nearby funeral.
