Hurricane Dorian: No school Tuesday in Collier County 'out of an abundance of caution'

Collier County public school students, faculty and staff should not report to classes Tuesday, the district announced on its website Monday.

Hurricane Dorian's turn north from the Bahamas is not expected until early Tuesday, the district's announcement states. National Weather Service worse-case predictions suggest that the storm could bring wind speeds in Collier County above what is considered safe for school buses to be on the road, according to the Collier County School District.

The district announced the following closures "out of an abundance of caution":

  • All after-school programs held at CCPS sites will be closed
  • All extracurricular activities, including athletic practices and competitions, will be canceled
  • All Adult and Community Education classes will be cancelled
  • All District leases will be suspended

Hurricane Dorian, now a Category 4 storm, blew into the northern Bahamas as a Category 5 and has nearly stalled over the islands.

The storm is expected to take a turn north, which could bring serious impacts to parts of Florida's east coast and to the southeastern United States, including the Carolinas.
