Space Launch Delta 45 has announced the permanent closure of the South Gate launch viewing area at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, starting Nov. 1. The decision comes after an increase in concerns over public safety, following several serious vehicle crashes in the vicinity and a significant increase in launch frequency.

In an emailed press release, Brig. Gen. Kristin Panzenhagen, Space Launch Delta 45 commander, emphasized that the decision was only made after serious consideration.

"The safety of the public is our utmost priority. Recent incidents highlighted an unacceptable level of risk to bystanders at the South Gate viewing area and to the continuity of our mission," she said in the statement. "While we understand the disappointment this closure may cause, we cannot compromise on safety."

With the closure of the South Gate viewing area, Space Launch Delta 45 said space enthusiasts have several other designated viewing locations throughout Brevard County. The Space Coast has seen more than 50 launches so far this year.

Space Launch Delta 45, situated at both Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, operates the Eastern Range, providing safety and mission assurance for all rocket launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
