Now You Know: Author White at MIHM; author Karl visits Book Club

The Marco Island Historical Society presents a children’s story time and book signing with historian and author Jonathan W. White at 2 p.m., March 30. White will do a reading from his book, “My Day With Abe Lincoln,” that includes stories of Lincoln’s childhood.

White is a professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University. He has authored or edited 17 books and more than 100 articles, essays and reviews about the Civil War, slavery and emancipation, African American history, Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Constitution. He also serves on the Ford’s Theatre Advisory Council, editorial board of Pennsylvania Magazine of History, and editor of both Lincoln Lore and The Lincoln Forum Bulletin.

Books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to all ages.  

The Marco Island Historical Museum is located at 180 S. Heathwood Drive. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free, and the site is handicapped accessible. For general information visit themihs.org or call 239-642-1440.

Local author shares stories with Book Club

Peter Karl, a Marco Island resident and retired award-winning Chicago television investigative reporter, joined the Marco Island Book Club to share stories from his latest thriller “Amber Eyes.”

Karl brings the Chicago crime scene to life in the book, and the 21 members loved the Chicago hot dog-themed evening hosted by Teresa Perkins and Maureen Wilke.

Spirt Awards arrive in April

The Rotary Club of Marco Island Noontime recently announced a “big” social event for April, the 14th Annual Spirit Awards of Marco Island Great Gatsby Gala.

The event will be held at the Island Country Club at 5 p.m., April 27. Enjoy live entertainment and dancing, dining, awards and more. 

Join the Great Gatsby spirit and dress in Roaring 20s or cocktail attire.

The individuals and organizations that are being honored for their exceptional contributions to the community are the Marco Island Historical Society, Jennifer and Derek Tenney, the YMCA of Collier County and Mike Stanczak.
