Dining review: Tokyo Sushi is off the beaten path, but on the mark

All things considered, you might not expect to find a quality meal stuck between a Dollar Tree and a Goodwill Store. But I will leave no stone unturned in my attempt to shine a light on delicious eats often overlooked by those snobbish reviewers.

Tokyo Sushi of Naples offers a peaceful respite away from the crowds.

Our dining experience got off to an appetizing start with not one, but two starters, the vegetable fried dumplings from the appetizer menu and the “sandi” roll from the sushi menu. The roll was a work of art, think JB roll – salmon and cream cheese – then add a generous amount of avocado; and, what’s that? If I’m not mistaken, flecks of crispy tempura batter, which is a signature here (they also add the flecks to their clear soup, but more on that in a moment).

So, you never thought you’d give up the pork dumplings? Well, one bite of these veggie variety, with their green hue and unbelievably light flavor, will change your mind. It’s all the flavor with half the guilt.

My main entrée was the chicken curry fried rice. Or should I say, a heaping pile of goodness that delivered bite after bite; chucks of white chicken, assorted veggies, mixed in with well-done rice; not oily like you often see. This dish is enough for two; or a nice take-home dish.

My partner in dine ordered the Katsu chicken. He described the light panko crust as “golden crisp to perfection.” It came with clear soup, with those delicious tempura flecks; a house salad, rice and dipping sauce. The chicken was also served on a bed of vegetables.

Another king-sized meal that would satisfy at least two diners. And given the amount, I was happy to sample the dish. My mouth did the dance of joy. In hindsight, I should have never agreed to give it a try. Like white chocolate M&Ms (yes, that’s a thing), or Pringles, there’s no just eating one bite.
