Tigertail Beach neglected

Escorting off-island guests to Tigertail Beach Park has become more of an embarrassment than a pleasure.

Tigertail Park’s years of neglect and disrepair should be unacceptable to any responsible administration, (restrooms inop.; subsidiary abandoned; vending machines in op.; signs unreadable, grounds neglected e.g.).

It has obviously become an uncaring Collier County ‘stepchild.’

I believe that, given proper interest and incentive, Tigertail Park could and should be a positive attraction of Marco Island for both residents and tourists, instead of an embarrassment. With that in mind, council, will you explore today’s possibility of Marco Island acquiring Tigertail Park from Collier County, either via purchase or by lease and report back to the community?

Rents out of control

I am flabbergasted at the greed in Naples.  I moved here  during the recession in 2009.  I found a nice condo for rent and the property manager practically begged me to rent it because it had been empty for almost two years.  I took the condo and he said it would be for five years at a very nice rent!  He was thrilled and so was I.  Then the owner passed away after telling me that he was happy with how I took care of the place.  After that his wife didn't want anything to do with the place so their oldest son became the landlord and raised the rent $250 per month! I accepted that because I didn't want to move and he extended the lease for a number of years.  That man died suddenly and his younger brother took over.  He raised the rent slightly for another few years and now wants to more than double the rent without doing one thing in the place. No painting, or any upgrades, nada.  I am a senior with no place to go.  The rents are out of control and the one bedroom condos are triple what I pay.

In my book it's all greed, greed and greed again.  How do the landlords live with themselves?  Help!!!

President not a king

I can't for the life of me square the claim of presidential immunity. I remember in the early days Stephen Miller claiming something akin to the Nixon statement: If a president does it, it's legal.

No, no I don't believe that for a second. Obviously, our president is the most powerful politician in these United States. Yet, he is not a king. Using the G.O.P's logic; Biden could delay or eliminate any future elections and remain president/king until his death. Who just prior to his death appoints someone else to assume the presidency. Who then continues the practice of canceled presidential elections. If I were Biden, I'd pardon my son and any of his business partners; while granting them immunity from any future investigations.

Haley can unite us

I am supporting Nikki Haley for President for several reasons. The first is I think she can win! The most critical job of a president of the United States is good judgment on foreign policy, where she has some experience based on her service as U.S. ambassador to the UN. She also has experience as a legislator and governor in South Carolina, where she successfully threaded her way between opposing factions. As a moderate, she can unite us instead of dividing our country, which is probably the most difficult job our next president must tackle.

GOP not serious about border

Many concerns have been expressed on these pages about control of our southern border. Blame has been heaped upon President Biden, even though his immigration reform bill sat, unconsidered, in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, since the Republicans won control of that House. The Republicans, if they were serious about "fixing the border" could have sent the president's bill to committee(s), amended it, sent it to the floor, sent it to the Senate, etc. The two speakers of the House did nothing. Instead, the Republicans simply whined and complained. Now we know why.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has said that House Republicans "can't" support a solution addressing the border until Trump is back in the White House. So, my Republican-voting neighbors should understand, this is not about closing the border or about national security. This is just another chance for House Republicans to score political points. I wonder how conservative Republican Senator James Lankford, who is negotiating with the White House in good faith on a solution to the border issue, feels about his House colleagues.
