Hurricane Irma: Collier closes school all week

Collier County public schools will be closed Monday through Friday, the school district announced Sunday as Hurricane Irma bore down on Southwest Florida. 

About 15,000 people are taking refuge from the storm in 27 Collier schools. 

"This will allow for our CCPS staff, students and parents who evacuated out of the area who will need to wait on the storm to pass to return home," said Greg Turchetta, a district spokesman. 

Additional closings will be announced by the end of the week, Turchetta said.
